History
State enterprise “Research and Telecommunication Centre “Ukrainian Academic Research Network” of the Institute for Condensed Matter Physics of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine (later on UARNet) was founded by Resolution № 405 as of November, 20 1998 of the Head Council of the National Academy of Sciences on the basis of IT and Computer Networks Laboratory of the Institute for Condensed Matter Physics of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine.
UARNet was founded to provide:
favorable conditions for state science development;
access for scientific and educational organizations to the global informational network;
connection with European scientific information networks;
full-scale development and implementation of modern information technologies;
introduction of new information technologies into the work of scientific, educational and state administrations;
research in the field of satellite connection and telecommunication data transmission;
full-range cooperation of Ukrainian scientific centers with European and global scientific community (participation in joint global scientific programs including programs financed by the European Committee and governments of developed European countries)
creating scientific information space in Ukraine.
In 1993 with the assistance of Swedish Space Corporation, UARNet was the first in Ukraine to build its own satellite connection channel to the global Internet and provide its users with high-quality access to the Internet network. Since then, UARNet has been expanding its network each year, building intercity data channels and creating favorable conditions for providing access for scientific, educational and state organizations to global information resources.
Today
At present (February, 2011), UARNet is one of the biggest Internet providers in Ukraine with its own data transmission network and external channels to the global Internet. The total capacity of UARNet external channels amounts to over 100 Gb/s. The access to non-Ukrainian Internet resources is provided via Tier1-providers “Level3”, “Cogent” and “Global Crossing”, Russian provider “ReTN.net”. UARNet is a member of European Internet Traffic Exchanges DE-CIX, AMS-IX and PL-IX. UARNet has its sites (POPs) in all regional centers of Ukraine as well as in Frankfurt (Germany) and Warsaw (Poland). All sites are interconnected by ring topological structured multiple10 Gb/s data channels. UARNet is also connected to the Ukrainian Internet Traffic Exchange Network UA-IX through four 10 Gb/s data channels.
In 1994, UARNet was registered by the European Network Coordination Centre RIPE as an autonomous system (AS 3255)
